A Candlelit Wedding Aboard HMS Warrior, Portsmouth
There are weddings… and then there’s an HMS Warrior Wedding. Steeped in history, full of character, and completely unlike anywhere else, photographing a wedding aboard this iconic Portsmouth landmark was an experience I won’t forget in a hurry.
From the moment I stepped on board, I knew this day was going to be special. The Warrior has such a powerful presence — iron hull, towering masts, layers of naval history and it created the most incredible backdrop for a truly intimate wedding.
HMS Warrior Wedding
A Ceremony Below Deck by Candlelight
The ceremony took place below deck, lit by candlelight, and honestly… wow. It felt cinematic, atmospheric and deeply romantic without trying too hard. The warm glow of the candles against the dark wooden interior made it feel incredibly intimate!
With about 70 friends and family present, the whole ceremony felt calm, emotional and very personal. The setting alone did half the storytelling for the photographs.
A Tight Timeline (and a Very Worthy Challenge)
We had 55 minutes.
That was it.
In that short window we needed to capture:
- Bride & groom portraits
- Group photos
- Natural, candid moment
It was fast-paced, focused and required a bit of military-style organisation (which felt quite fitting given the venue). But with a clear plan and a relaxed couple who trusted the process, we absolutely made it work.
Having a venue like HMS Warrior helps enormously — every corner offers texture, depth and interest, meaning we could move quickly without sacrificing variety.
Why a Second Photographer Made All the Difference
I was also joined by Scott, my second photographer, who covered two hours from just before the ceremony — and honestly, he was a godsend.
While I focused on the key moments, Scott captured:
- Guests arriving
- Pre-ceremony atmosphere
- Alternative angles during the ceremony
- Candids whilst I photographed the ‘formal’ family photos
It meant nothing was missed, even with the tight timings, and the couple received a beautifully rounded gallery that told the full story of their day.
If you’re planning a wedding with a shorter photography window or a unique venue, a second photographer is always something I highly recommend, which you will NEVER regret!
Styling & Details
The styling throughout the day complemented the venue perfectly — elegant, understated and timeless, allowing the history of the ship to shine rather than compete with it.
- The florals by Bonnie from Solent Stems Florist added softness and texture against the ship’s strong lines
- Lo and Behold (Ami Hyde) provided non-floral décor that enhanced the atmosphere without overpowering it
- The bride’s dress from Anya Bridal Couture (Pronovias) was classic and refined — a perfect match for such a historic setting
Hair and makeup by Amy Jenkins Hair and Makeup was flawless and natural, holding beautifully throughout the day (even below deck).
A Truly Unforgettable HMS Warrior Wedding
HMS Warrior is bold, dramatic and rich with story, and photographing a wedding here felt like being part of something genuinely special.
If you’re planning a wedding in Portsmouth or looking for a venue that offers something completely different, HMS Warrior is one I’ll always be excited to return to.
